Date: Dec. 9, 2021
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Elections

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Protecting Our Democracy Act, legislation to prevent presidential abuse, increase transparency and accountability measures between Congress and the Executive Branch, and protect our elections from foreign interference. The legislation passed includes an amendment sponsored by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) to require the extension of whistleblower protections to executive branch interns and fellows.

"Today the House took much-needed steps to safeguard our democracy and signaled to the world that American democracy is worth fighting for," said Rep Omar. "This legislation will restore our system of checks and balances, protect our elections, and bolster congressional oversight. I am glad our amendment was also included to extend whistleblower protections and protect those often left behind--interns and fellows. As someone who survived civil conflict, I know personally that we should never take our democracy for granted. This bill is a critical step to preserve and protect our democracy."
